For Shamrock Capital Advisors, fundraising for its third pool was a rather quick affair. The Los Angeles PE firm spent roughly eight months marketing for Shamrock Capital Growth Fund III L.P. which just raised $400 million. By comparison, Shamrock spent a year fundraising for its second pool, which came in with $311.5 million in 2006, says managing partner Stephen Royer. Fundraising has been tough for several firms and many are taking longer to finish. Shamrock actually began marketing for fund III late last year and most of the money was lined up by April, Royer says. A final close didn't occur until last week, he says.

Apax Partners and two Canadian pension funds will pay $4.98 billion to buy medical device maker Kinetic Concepts Inc., taking the company private, Reuters reported. At $68.50 per share, the purchase price represents a premium of 6 percent to Kinetic's close on Tuesday, Reuters said.
Listed, California-based games developer Electronic Arts will acquire PopCap Games, the companies announced Tuesday. EA will pay approximately $650 million in cash and $100 million in shares of EA common stock to be issued to certain stockholders of PopCap. EA has executed a commitment letter for a $550 million senior unsecured bridge facility for the deal. Morgan Stanley & Co. LLC provided EA's board of directors valuation advice in connection with the transaction. EA was also assisted by UBS Investment Bank.
Qualtre Inc., the Massachusetts-based motion sensor supplier, has raised $10 million from VC investors including Matrix Partners and Pilot House Ventures. Stan Reiss, a general partner with Matrix Partners, worked on the for the VC. Specifics of the transaction were not publicized.
