Not a political statement, but a funny report all the same, from the global news agency AFP: Google Maps has a clear satellite view of the US vice president’s home available online in a development that curiously coincides with the departure of secret-prone Dick Cheney. The abode in Washington, DC, that has served for 25 […]
File this under ridiculous study of the day: Bloomberg is reporting a University of Cambridge study that found traders whose ring fingers are longer than average make more money than others. You’ve likely heard about “digit ratio” theory before. It’s based on the premise that finger size reflects how much testosterone an unborn baby is exposed to […]
I realize our jails are overcrowded, but this is ridiculous.  Manhattan Judge Ronald Ellis just denied U.S. prosecutors’ request to revoke Bernie Madoff’s $10 million bail after the government learned Madoff and/or his wife mailed a million dollars in jewels and other valuables to family members, and that Madoff had $173 million in checks that […]
Geez, Louise. Another powerful financier was just found dead. This time, the victim was 74-year-old billionaire Adolf Merckle, who apparently jumped before a train near his hometown of Blauberen, Germany some time yesterday. Merckle had been unsuccessfully seeking a bailout for his own family’s holding company, VEM Vermoegensverwaltung GmbH, which has seen the value of […]
While you were tearing into your neatly packaged gifts last weekend, Netscape cofounder Jim Clark and his glamorous fiancée, Kristy Hinze, were greeting friends at their engagement party at a mansion in Point Piper, an affluent harbor town east of Sydney, Australia. Unfortunately, for the couple, they were also swatting back Australian paparazzi, who are […]
You might think it impossible to add any greater insult to the injuries of Bernie Madoff's clients, who lost much of their wealth through the $50 billion Ponzi scheme that he's been accused of creating. But now the New York Post reports that, more than three weeks after his arrest, his employees are still showing up to work everyday -- and collecting their paychecks. Every day, dozens of employees of swindler Bernard Madoff's firm report to their Midtown offices. They're still paid - but they do no work. The phones at Madoff Securities are turned off. The few computers that remain aren't plugged in. "It's pretty bad," one employee said. "We can't conduct any business. We basically get there at 9, hang around, and go home at 5. It's surreal. It's also scary, because we don't know what's going on. It's not known yet who knows what, and I'm sure many of his employees
Showing his support for someone else’s May-December romance for a change, Mick Jagger attended the wedding of 59-year-old, billionaire space trotter Charles Simonyi to 28-year-old Swedish investment banker Lisa Persdotter in Gothenburg, Sweden this past weekend. Simonyi, who plans to spend tens of millions of dollars to visit the International Space Station for the second […]
A survival of the fittest challenge has been playing out in Canada this year, and six-year-old Yaletown Venture Partners has apparently been deemed one of the more robust venture outfits by institutional investors. The firm just closed on an initial $65 million for its second fund, Yaletown Ventures II Limited Partnership. Yaletown closed its first, $42 million fund, […]
On my way downtown this morning, I was skimming an article in this week’s New Yorker that asks the question: Why do we equate genius with precocity? In the story, author Malcolm Gladwell tries to dispel the widely held belief that all true innovators — geniuses — make their mark on the world at an […]
On Tuesday, at the Indus Entrepreneurs conference in Santa Clara, Calif., Benchmark Capital’s newest partner, Matt Cohler, recounted a scene from 2004 that changed his life. Cohler — then a recent Yale graduate working at the business networking site LinkedIn —  was hanging out with his boss, LinkedIn founder and angel investor Reid Hoffman. The […]
